Meeting India’s demand for skilled labour through private sector participation, says Subbiah
The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) made its first disbursements today in New Delhi. The NSDC Chairman, Mr M.V. Subbiah, said, “GJEPC and Basix Academy have been selected as one of the first beneficiaries of NSDC. I am sure their efforts in the area of vocational training are going to go a long way in the herculean task of skill development in India.”
NSDC has so far approved Rs. 45.38 crore for three projects which will eventually create 10.5 lakh skilled manpower at the rate of about one lakh per annum over 10 years. More projects, with potential of adding significantly to the skilled workforce including trainers of the country, are in advance stages of consideration. National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) was formally launched on October 20, 2009 with detailed guidelines on submission of proposals by prospective training providers being hosted on its website. NSDC is mandated to achieve the objective of skilled workforce of 150 million persons (30% of the national target) by 2022 through skill development and up gradation. As a first step towards achieving this target, a comprehensive skill gap study has been completed for 21 high growth sectors, in order to build a base line for formulation of a comprehensive strategy.
Amongst the beneficiaries’ Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has proposed to set up Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery Jaipur (IIGJJ) in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Gems & Jewellery at Sitapura in Jaipur. The proposed institute is being set up with the objective of developing highly skilled manpower in jewellery designing & manufacturing and creating state of the art testing and R&D centre for the Gems & Jewellery industry. The institute would be equipped with modern machineries & training equipment and other necessary infrastructure to cater to the demand of the SEZ. IIGJJ estimates to train approximately 18,000 artisans, technicians and new entrants over the next 10 years. Presently The Gems and Jewellery Industry contributes 13% of the total export earnings of the country.
The 2nd beneficiary, B-ABLE (BASIX Academy for Building Lifelong Employability), a Basix subsidiary, (Delhi based) will skill 1 million people over 10 years. B-ABLE plans to build a franchisee network of training centers across India with emphasis on providing skilling to socially and economically under privileged youth in 6 sectors : Construction, Tourism & Hospitality, Healthcare, Banking and Insurance, Food Processing, Rural Farm and Non Farm. The skilling provided will be based on modern pedagogy and aims to build self esteem through skilling in Rural India.
A Memorandum of Approval was signed with Gram Tarang (promoted by Centurion Group, Orissa). This project will aim to skill youth in the Naxalite belt of Orissa. Their main trades of skilling will be across Manufacturing, Construction, Tailoring, Plumbing, Textiles, Unorganised sector, Retail etc. The project will aim to train 21,000 people in 5 years.
